Lexington Lake Park
Poster Design
Poster design done for the Johnson County Park and Recreation District as a part of their inaugural poster design competition. Me, and 3 other artists, were selected out of the Kansas City area to illustrate our assigned parks. Lexington Lake Park, in De Soto, KS, was selected for me.
A massive tree is the feature, accompanied by a pair of fisherman and remnants of stonewalls built by early KS settlers. The illustration style is inspired by that of vintage WPA posters from the past.

Process
Many trips to Lexington Lake Park were taken, whether to capture photos or just get inspired, it was one of the more relaxing projects I’ve worked on. Sketches and the final rendering were done on the iPad. The artwork was brought into Illustrator and vectorized for the diversity of print sizes.
Part of the design requirements was to mimic the style of vintage WPA posters, as well as fitting a limited color scheme.
The trickiest part was nailing the tree texture in a simplistic way. You can see below how I experiment with different shapes and patterns.
